Qigong  氣功; = Energy Work

Qigong is any study or training dealing with Qi which takes time and effort to achieve.

Qigong is an ancient Chinese health care system that intergrates pysical postures, focused intention and controlled breathing performed in a meditative state.  

 

The word Qi refers to all energy circulating in the human body as well as all energy in the Universe

 

Today in China, Qigong is divided into three branches:  Medical, Spiritual, and Martial.  

Medical Qigong:

  1.  Purifies the body

  2. Strengthens the body's internal systems.

  3. Balancing the body's energies


Spiritual Qigong:
Using various breathing and intention techniques to deepen meditation Qigong balances:

  1. The Spirit

  2. Thoughts and emotions

  3. Combines intent with Qi in order to direct the Qi where the body needs it most

Ba Duan Jin (Eight Gorgeous Sections Exercises) is one of the traditional Qigong exercises.  Its creation can be traced back to the Song Dynasty (960 – 1279).  

The character of Ba Duan Jin Qigong is gentle, slow, smooth and consistent.  The exercise rhythmically combines relaxation and strength, and dynamism and inertia.  It combines mind and body to cultivate vital energy.  It can be practiced while standing or sitting. With easy movements and impressive effects on the health, it is a gem in China’s health and fitness culture.

Ba Duan Jin has 8 movement sets with each set performed 8 times.

When performed Ba Duan Jin conditions every muscle and organ in the body.

In China millions of people practice Ba Duan Jin up to 3 or 4 times a day in parks, at work, in school yards or at home.

1. Lifting The Sky: This is the first movement in the Ba Duan Jin.  Lifting The Sky strengthens the Triple Burner sending healing Qi to the  heart, liver, spleen, lung, kidney, gall bladder, stomach, large intestine, small intestine, bladder and triple burner (which is related to the Pancreas and endocrine system in the body, it is a collective term for the Upper, middle and lower burner. “Triple Burner” means 3 parts which burn. When the triple burner circulates well, all the meridians will work smoothly. That is why it is most effective to start with this form.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 



 
2.The Archer: Shoot the eagle with golden arrow This movement strengthens the liver and large intestine.  When moving the left hand you are strengthening the liver.  The Right hand strengthens the large intestine.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


3.Separating Heaven And Earth: This movement harmonizes the spleen and stomach.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 



4.Wise Owl Gazes Backward: This circulates the twelve meridians as well as the arteries.  It also opens the channels to the Dan Tien.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


5.Big Bear Turns From Side To Side: This will exercise the spine which will then harmonize the heart and kidney.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


6.Punching With Angry Gaze: This movement increases vitality, focus and strengthens the back and waist. It stimulates the three inner arm and three outer arm meridians.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 



 7.Touching The Toes then Bending Backwards: This guides the Qi to the kidneys, strengthens the waist and back.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

8. Bounce: This calms the body and mind, and cleanses the lymph system.
